Shave Gel vs Shave Foam

It’s always a little tricky knowing which one to go for if you’re trying to create the perfect shave- what is the difference between shave gel and shave foam and what should you base your decision on?

Lubrication

A shave prep should create enough lubrication so that there’s a cushion between your sharp razor blade and your skin- and whilst we’re all used to the big fluffy white cloud that a shave foam creates, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s protecting your skin all that much.

Another thing to bear in mind is that shave gels tend to last longer- a little goes a long way with this product. Whilst shave foams can dry up and you’re required to reapply during your shave so that you maintain a consistent ‘cushioning’, this isn’t the case with shave gels.

Score: Gel 1, Foam 0

Lather

A shaving gel tends to offer more lubrication, however it doesn’t foam up. Instead you will need to rub it in your hands in order to work it into a slight lather before applying it to your face and neck. Another difference is that shave gel is more transparent, unlike shave foam so it’s a lot easier to see where you’re supposed to be shaving- this is especially important if you only want to tidy up your facial hair rather than going for the full clean-shaven look.

Score: Gel 1, Foam 1

Sensitive Skin

Shave foams tend to be a little more drying so if you suffer from sensitive or dry skin it is best to avoid using a shave foam, and instead opting for a shave gel. This is because shave gels are glycerine based, a humectant that attracts moisture to the skin. It’s also great for smoothing and protecting the skin- making it the better option for any type of skin, but especially sensitive or dry.

Final Score: Gel 2, Foam 1

So there you have it, our vote is for shave gel – in our experience, it gives a smoother, more comfortable shave and that is more important than a fluffy white lather. But, of course, it is down to personal preference – if a foam or cream is more your thing, then you can always join Cornerstone and simply not include our gel in your shave plan.
