London Collections: Men for SS16 has been the most successful to date enticing more brands, designers, buyers and influencers to the fashion capital than ever before. After four super busy, intense and at times surreal days at LC:M we are now energised and inspired. The SS16 catwalks were awash with statement prints, iridescent blue hues and tactile textures and thus the fashion trends which have emerged show fresh ways to wear traditional pieces as well as daring directional pieces designed to test the limits of menswear.
Desert Army
Safari and army influenced styles created one of the strongest trends for SS16 with Belstaff showing a desert inspired collection full of details from oversize pockets to army style belts. Elsewhere there were safari neutrals from Dunhill, army prints from Christopher Raeburn and strong animal prints from Coach. The all-in-one jumpsuit from Turnbull and Asser or Dunhill, for the most fashion forward men, adds to the deconstructed military feel.
Shape Up – Trousers and Shorts
Skinny styles are still referenced in the collections with cargos from Belstaff and biker influenced skinnies from Topman Design. However, trouser shapes are becoming increasingly directional with super wide legs and flares from Christopher Raeburn, Topman Design and Oliver Spencer. Cropped trousers and city shorts are becoming more important for a fresh new look from Alexander McQueen, Kit Neale, Margaret Howells and JW Anderson.
All Over Print
Printed suits are a strong and sharp look with traditional cool checks in classic colours and pastel shades at Thomas Pink creating a preppy and sharp look for a modern gent. Turnbull and Asser demonstrate their brand heritage with extreme attention to detail in traditional suits with intricate prints. To stand out, go strong and graphic with black and white zig-zags from Alexander McQueen or over the top prints from J. W. Anderson and Kit Neale.
Oriental
East meets West with oriental inspired styles fused with modern loungewear and sportswear pieces. Long and loose layers with floral prints create a cool silhouette in lightweight, sheer fabrics as seen on the catwalk at Astrid Andersen. Changshan and kimono shapes heavily influence the look for SS16 with obi belts add shape to suits and or cinch in layers at the waist.
Mix it up
Look no further than House of Holland, Topman Design, Coach and Kit Neale for a flash of fun. Henry Holland continues his love of clashing colours and slogan designs with phrases such as ‘Lad, legend, Lover’ emblazoned key pieces. Words also come into play in Topman Design’s collection with a rock and roll rebellious edge with ‘Let’s Riot’ badges sewn onto biker inspired looks. Coach and Kit Neale add vibrant prints for a touch of drama.
Sports
Sports luxe is now a perma trend and each season it changes and morphs into a new look. This season it appears in a clean and classic form with Tommy Hilfiger or in the laser cut outs and directional hoodies of Christopher Raeburn. Sportswear motifs, splashes of colour and stripes were also part of Topman Design and House of Holland. Citrus lemon and rose pink lightweight fabrics mix with darker shades and metallic details to toughen up this cool summer look.
Monochrome
Black and white is an all-year-round classic which looks sharp, crisp and clean. Layer up monochrome pieces and use accessories to bring this look together. Texture is key – a lace jacket a la Burberry makes this a stylish choice for the warmer months.
