15 minutes with Sheriff Mehmet from Envy Barbers

Envy Barbers in London by Sheriff Mehmet
For issue number six of our magazine 15 Minutes, we meet with owner of Envy Barbers London, Sheriff Mehmet. Barbering is in Sheriff’s blood, he’s a third generation barber and his salons are deemed the country’s best, so naturally we wanted to meet with him to get his take on male grooming and what gets his day off to a good start.

So how did you get into barbering Sheriff?

I’m a third generation barber, with 25 years of experience in the barbering industry. My grandfather came over to the UK from Cyprus and opened up a barber shop which my father started working in and then I joined the family business. I re-branded the barber shop to Envy Barbers and opened up a further three salons. We’re now in Walthamstow, Chingford, Hornchurch and Covent Garden; this is our main salon. My role has changed during the last 25 years and what we offer has evolved too. We don’t just offer the usual grooming services. I also travel throughout the country educating, giving seminars and teaching new barbers and people who want to get into the barbering industry. I’m proud to say that Envy Barbers are known as the country’s best barbers.

What is your favourite part of the job?

It’s hard to choose just one thing, I’ve been doing this for so long and being that it’s a family business (my son is now working for me too), makes the job very enjoyable for me. I really love teaching, giving seminars and talks and also doing the every day barber jobs such as cutting hair.

What are the three grooming products you can’t live without?

Personally, I love the Castle-Forbes shaving range, particularly their cream and balm. When it comes to hair I’m a big fan of Jack Dean hair tonic, nothing beats that in my opinion.

What does your morning routine consist of?

I always start my day off with a shower. I don’t shave every day, but when I do I’ll follow up my shower with a shave. I normally use face wash every day, however I’ll swap this with a face scrub a couple of times a week. I always use a shave cream when shaving and finish my shave off with a moisturising balm. Once I’ve shaved and got dressed, I’ll grab something to eat before heading out of the door. Each day is different for me, I might be giving barber training for Headmasters salons, or shaving training for Toni & Guy. If I don’t have any trainings or seminars then I’ll normally head to our Covent Garden shop.

What’s the one thing you do that sets you up for a good day ahead?

I’d have to say my Jack Dean hair tonic. It’s really energising and great for refreshing the scalp so it’s a great product to use in the mornings.
