A collection of short stories about people who escaped from North Korea. Reading about the distrust between people, the harsh police state, and the lack of basics like food and electricity, it makes you realise how lucky we are to be born in the West!

Based on the story-telling night, and podcast by the same name, The Moth publishes a series of stories, as they were told, from the mouths of those who experienced them. A perfect series of essays and incredible story-telling.

A very short philosophical book about the power of thought.

Current read: First Time Parent, by Lucy Atkins
It’s a down-to-earth guide to parenting which is very reassuring without being patronising. It’s quite funny, honest, well laid-out and most importantly it gives sound and sensible advice which makes the year ahead seem less scary.

Read if it if you want to go on a ride.

Set in a bar in an unnamed Congolese mining town, Tram 83 follows poet Lucien and his escapades with a cast of writers, drunkards, drug dealers and dreamers. Very gritty, but really really interesting.
