It’s back to school season so it’s time to say goodbye to holidays and focus on the last quarter of the year. This might mean that you’re stuck doing job interviews. If you’re interviewing for your dream job, it’s safe to say that you will be stressed out, so here are a few easy tips to take the edge off, by ensuring you make a good first impression.
Shave
There’s nothing worse than starting off on the wrong foot, and a well-groomed face lets you put your best foot – or rather your best face – forward. Let’s be honest with ourselves, only the likes of Tom Hardy or Damian Lewis can sport a classy beard, so it’s probably best to go for the classic clean-shaven look: it never fails to impress. Make sure you scrub your face before the shave to reduce the chance of ingrown hairs, and use a good quality shave gel or cream to avoid razor burn.
If you prefer the bearded look, then we’d recommend shaving your neck and/or cheeks, allowing for a neater look.
Take care of your skin
Moisturising is the next best thing, second to shaving, that you can do to make your skin feel interview ready. No one wants to rock up to the interview sporting patches of dry skin. It’ll also help keep irritation at bay, and restore your skin’s natural moisture balance after shaving – allowing you to feel confident in your own skin.
Hair
Again we’d recommend keeping it simple, here. Your hairstyle is a reflection of your personality – so if it looks a hot mess, your potential employers might extend the same impression to you. Our advice is to start with clean, dry hair – and then, using a little matte hair wax, run your fingers through your hair to style it with an effortlessly natural look.

What to wear
Depending on the role keep it smart, but a little bit casual – a classic look never fails. We find keeping it simple makes both for a stress-free morning, and a good impression left with your future employers. Go for a clean, pressed shirt in a neutral colour, and tonal chinos to complement it; unless it’s really formal we’d leave the tie at home. Finally, nothing beats a smart, comfortable pair of brogues to top it all off.
Prepare
There’s no beating around the bush with this one – if you want the job, you need to prepare. The above tips are great to make a good first impression, but it’s up to you to close the deal. Make sure you read up on the company and the specific job and ensure you have answers to common interview questions such as ‘what’s your weakness?’ or ‘why should we hire you?’. Moreover, ensure you know your CV back to front too – they most likely will ask you about it and your past work experience.
Whatever happens in your upcoming interview, we hope it goes really well. However, if it doesn’t quite go to plan – don’t worry too much. Just know that the perfect job for you can be right around the corner.
Good luck!
