Sleeping Cool on Summer Nights

Now that the seasons have changed and temperatures are soaring, many a midsummer night’s dream can turn into a nightmare as you struggle to get some shut-eye. In order to help you simmer down and chill out during bedtime, we’ve teamed up with eve, who after spending years developing their perfect mattress, know a thing or two about great sleep and perfect starts. Here are their top tips for sleeping cool on summer nights.

Keep the curtains closed

If the sun shines directly into your bedroom during the day, make sure to keep windows and curtains closed during daylight to keep the sun’s heat rays out. At night, open wide so air can circulate.

Refresh before bed

Take a lukewarm shower before bed. Don’t shower cold as this will make you sweat rather than cool you down. If you don’t fancy a warm shower or simply don’t have the time or energy, try holding your wrists under cold running water for a little while for a similar cooling effect.

Ice cubes

You may be tempted to put a fan in your room to blast cool air in. That may make falling asleep easier, but the constant cold airflow could also lead to a cold or neck problems. Instead, try putting a big bag of ice cubes in front of the fan for a few minutes before you go to sleep to freshen up the air in the bedroom. But when it’s time to sleep, turn off the fan.

Choose the right gear

Your choice of mattress is crucial. You will need one that is specifically developed to keep you cool and offer a great night’s sleep. Your perfect mattress should have a good layering system made from breathable memory foam to balance out bounce and support. We personally think the eve mattress is perfect for this. Choosing sheets of natural fabric that don’t retain heat will also go a long way towards helping you sleep well.

Drink, drink, drink

Even if you’re not thirsty, your body needs fluids to get you through the hot summer nights. Have enough to drink (and by this we mean water, not summer cocktails) before you go to sleep.

Don’t indulge in heavy meals

Sweet, fatty and salty foods can also have an impact. Go for a light meal in the evening to ensure a good night’s sleep.
