Fashion: Key trends for Summer 2017

When the weather takes a nice turn you want to make the most of it. With trends coming and going, it’s always nice to know what you’re cottoning on to. This summer it’s all about loose shapes and bold stripes; no longer are we interested in the skin tight, form fitting silhouettes that once dominated menswear, it’s all about freedom and, in the sun, keeping cool. Here are The Idle Man‘s fashion suggestions for this summer season.

Bold Stripes

Cemented in fashion history by none other than Coco Chanel, the once fisherman friendly pattern has been revived into something completely modern and contemporary. Think bold and vertical this season for stripes set against a neutral background.

Loose button down shirts with a contrasting stripe teamed with looser trousers and trainers make one of this seasons biggest looks. Vary up the colour and width of the stripe you’re wearing to create punchy and statement looks.

Wide Leg Trousers

Wide leg trousers are here to stay, and we’re glad of it. No longer are the skinny and spray on silhouettes dominating the runways and stores alike, men are more interested in looser and more structured shapes to accompany their looks.

Brands such as Dickies have championed this silhouette over the past few years, and it’s certainly seeping into the mainstream with men the world over throwing out their skinny jeans in favour of a regular or wide fit.

Cuban Collar Shirts

This isn’t your dad on his mid-life crisis holiday to Hawaii kind of shirt, but more of a nod to the 50’s and 60’s with tailored trousers and a pair of loafers kind of shirt. Difference in material will make a real impact this season, as the bog-standard cotton simply isn’t cutting the mustard, so start thinking more silk and satin.

Cuban collar, in Layman’s terms, is simply an open collared shirt. This means that the lapel of the shirt it cut to show off the top part of your chest when button up, rather than buttoning up to your neck. A staple piece in warmer climates, it’s since made its way to our fair shores. Teamed with a pair of tailored trousers or chinos and a smart penny loafer, you’ll struggle to not nail this trend this summer.

Tonal

Tonal is a classic look that works no matter what the season. When we say tonal, we mean a look that’s all one colour; the classic all black springs to mind, but try and mix things up a little bit by branching out with different colours.

Personally, I’m all about navy and grey at the moment, anything navy or grey I can get my hands on I will. The great thing about neutral tones such as navy or grey is that you can vary up the shades that you wear. By this, I mean you can go for a lighter grey T-shirt and team it with a pair of darker grey trousers to create a contrasting and textured look.

Don’t be afraid to go bold with colour. Pink is a massive trend colour at the moment and going for an all pink look isn’t something to be scoffed at. It’ll take some confidence to pull off this look, but if you’re willing to experiment then go for it.
